Veteran actor Murray Hamilton, whose numerous film and television roles included that of the husband of the seductive Mrs. Robinson in the 1967 hit "The Graduate," has died in North Carolina, associates said here Tuesday. He was 63.

Agent Tom Korman said Hamilton died Sunday in Washington, N.C., where he was buried privately in his family's plot.

The actor reportedly had been battling lung cancer for the last several months, but worked almost until his death.

Korman said Hamilton had been scheduled to return to Hollywood to appear as Rue McClanahan's father in another segment of the popular "Golden Girls" television series.

Hamilton performed with Henry Fonda in the Broadway production of "Mr. Roberts" then went on to roles in numerous films, including "Bright Victory," "No Time For Sergeants," "No Way to Treat a Lady," "The Amityville Horror," "Jaws," "Jaws II," "The Way We Were," "Damnation Alley," "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium" and "Brubaker."

On television, he was seen in the pilot production of "The Cheap Detective," "The Chairman," "Watcher in the Shadows, "A Cry for Help," and the miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man."

He also appeared in episodes of such series as "Barnaby Jones," "Police Story," "Cannon," "McCloud," "Alice," "The Bold Ones" and "Mission Impossible."

He leaves his wife, Theresa, and a son, David.
