An important advancement in the transmission of news and information, on August 20, 1920, the 1st commercial radio station is launched in Detroit, Michigan. The station, 8MK (WWJ), was approved by the United States Department of Commerce Bureau of Navigation, was the first to broadcast regular news and sports reports, in addition to religious programs. The station would eventually be purchased by CBS radios, and was an innovation in the American obsession with live radio and news programs.
