As part of the maintenance of land and sea forces in the newly formed United States of America, on August 7, 1789, the U.S. War Department was established. Later to be named the Department of Defense, the organization was a part of the executive branch of the U.S. government, under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of War. It later became part of the National Military Establishment, with noticeable modification after World War Two. It was an important office in the new nation, in preparation for the defense against further aggression from Great Britain.
