1619 Arrival at Jamestown of African Slaves boosts tobacco industry.

  • Jamestown, Virginia

Beginning years of unfathomable hardship for Africans in North America, on Aug. 1, 1619, the first African slaves arrived in Jamestown, Virginia.  The Jamestown Colony grew tobacco as their main cash crop, and the necessity for manual labor brought the slave trade to the English colonies.  Though the population of slaves was initially small in Virginia, the number grew immensely, with the tobacco being sought throughout Europe, earning the disapproval from religious leaders.
