Just months after the U.S. Patent Office was established, on July 31, 1790, the first U.S. patent is issued.  The recipient, Samuel Hopkins, invented a new potash process, invented a new and more efficient way to make pot and pearl ash, useful in the manufacturing of glass and other chemicals.  A committee consisting of the Secretary of State and other top officials was appointed to regulate the passage of this patent, and its ensuing publication.
