Following a historic trial over the teaching of religion in schools, on July 21, 1925, Tennessee biology teacher John T. Scopes was found guilty of teaching evolution.  The trial, prosecuted by the famous lawyer and statesman William Jennings Bryan, brought national media attention to the town of Dayton, Tennessee.  Clarence Dow, who argued the case for the defense, challenged a previous law passed in March 1925 which forbade the teaching of any evolutionary theory in schools that challenged the divine creation as taught in the Bible.  The controversy over evolution remained an important topic in education.
