In one of the most decisive battles of World War One, on June 1, 1918, the Battle for Bellau Wood began. In these months before the signing of the armistice in Nov. 1918, the German Army attempted an offensive against a division of U.S. Marines, coming especially close to the French capital of Paris. The American Expeditionary Force was remembered for its bravery during this bloody defensive attempts, launching a counter-attack to stop the German advance. Despite numerous requests to abandon the defense, American commanders remained firm, mainly with the assistance of sharpshooters and snipers.
