On May 30, 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed, creating the U.S territories of Kansas and Nebraska. This was a controversial decision in regards to slavery, as the settlers of those territories were allowed to decide if slavery was permissable in those areas. This repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and prompted the rise of abolitionism in the United States.
