First Continental Congress convenes first session.

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Just years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, on May 28, 1774, the First Continental Congress convened its first session.  Over 55 members representing the American Colonies were in attendance, with the exception of representation from Georgia.  The Congres met only briefly, and soon after organized the Second Continental Congress, which would be the governing force during the American Revolution.
