Under the assignment from U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, on May 14, 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition begain their historic continental journey.  This occurred just months after the historic Louisiana Purchase from France, with great interest in American expansion to the west coast.  The Lewis and Clark company soon followed the Missouri River west towards La Charrette, the last white settlement on the river.  The party would encounter hostile indians and treachorous terrain, only to reach their destination in the years that followed.
