In one of the most remarkable actions of the Jefferson presidency, on Apr. 30, 1803, the U.S. purchased the Louisiana Territory from France. The purchase effectively doubled the size of the United States, and at a mere $15 Million, was an amazing sum for the time. This was preceded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the western territories, and was a valuable asset to the United States.
