In a supreme example of Soviet defiance, on Apr. 1, 1948, Soviet controlled East Germany posted a blockade into West Berlin. The action prompted the UN response of the Berlin Airlift, sending food and supplies to the enclosed citizens. The blockade was later lifted after increased pressure and realization of the defiance of the Allied nations.
