On Mar. 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom's Cabin, the most direct and specific depiciton of the horrors of slavery in the United States. As one of the most important books of the nineteenth century, the book established validity to the abolitionist movement, and brought awareness to the ills of society.
