** Robert A. Smith a member of the Greene County's Company D 14th Illinois Volunteer Infantry when they fought at Shiloh.   He married Emily Ruyle and had a daughter Jessie Smith Hettick.**

Robert and Emily Smith are the great grandparents of Mrs. Nancy Riggs of Greenfield, Illinois , Mrs. Alice Elder of Springfield and Robert Hettick of Normal,IL.  Great Grandchildren are Mrs. Janet Gillespie, David Riggs, Mrs. Barbara Carter of Greenfield IL., Daniel Riggs of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Ann Workman of New Berlin, Aaron Kinser of Champaign, IL., Miss Diane Hettick and Steve Hettick of Normal,IL.

When Robert Smith was mustered out of the Army at the end of the Civil War he found it necessary to walk every step of the way home from Tennessee.  He told his grandson , Roy Hettick, There was not even a mule to be begged or borrowed.  There weren't any.  All horses and mules had been taken to the war also.  He bought a farm east of Athensville,IL. and lived the rest of his life there.
