Following a tumultuous trial involving civil rights, on Mar. 9, 1841, the Supreme Court ruled in the famous Amistad case.  The decision stipulated that the involved slaves were sold into slavery illegally.  This was a landmark case in the abolition of slavery in the United States, and attracted international attention.
