In one of the most controversial elections in U.S. history, on Feb. 17, 1801, Thomas Jefferson was elected President, with Aaron Burr as Vice President. Personal issues with Jefferson caused many to doubt the effectiveness of his presidency. The ensuing occurence of the death of Aaron Burr caused further doubt as to the future of the young nation, and its leaders.
