On Feb. 6, 1778, the Franco-American alliances were signed, thus stipulating support to the American cause from the French government. The French would prove vital in the British surrender at Yorktown, a key victory for the Patriots. The distance needed to travel by the French fleet proved troublesome for the Patriots as they attempted to drive the British Army closer to surrender.
