Abortion legalized in controversial Supreme Court case.

In a surprising announcement, on Jan. 22, 1973, the Supreme Court officially recognized the legality of abortion.  Such an act offended many, especially conservative supporters of President Richard Nixon, whose reliance on the "Silent Majority" assured his reelection in 1972. A new controversy over birth control began as human rights became a key social issue.
