In a show of international strength, on Jan. 20 1887, the U.S. Senate conceded the Navy to lease Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as a naval base. A strategic outpost in the Pacific Ocean, Pearl Harbor remained an important military location for years to follow, becoming most famous for the Dec. 7, 1941 bombing by Japanese Air Forces.
