In a surprising success for the Temperance Movement, on Jan. 16, 1919, the U.S. Congress formally ratified the institution of prohibition into national law. Such an act further cemented the appearance of Progressivism in post World War One public policy. Met with mixed approval by the American public, prohibition would dominate family and social circles throughout the 1920s.
