Following the destruction from the atom bombs in Japan, President Harry S. Truman announced the development of a hydrogen bomb, thus escalating the tension caused from nuclear development.  This announcement on Jan. 7, 1953, intensified the Cold War with the Soviet Union, while making landmark achievements in science.
