Continuing with FDR's ideal for social improvement, in an important speech given on January 5, 1949, President Harry Truman asserted the right of U.S. citizens to receive a "fair deal" from the government.  Such actions later influenced the "Great Society" measures of President Lyndon Johnson, though the contents of the Fair Deal never passed through congress.
