In a distinct threat to Soviet expansion, on January 1, 1947, the United States and Great Britain merge their occupation zones in Germany, foreshadowing the creation of the Federal Republic of Germany.  Tensions increase regarding the development of the Cold War, eventually leading to the East German blockade that would threaten the future of Germany.
