In doing research on Samuel Metz, who resided in Jay and Randolph Counties, in Indiana, during the 1850's, on behalf of a client, the attached documents were found. Samuel was born about 1815, in PA. He is listed on the 1840 census, in Coshocton Co., OH, and is in Randolph Co., IN for the 1850 census. Samuel was likely a son of Jacob Metz, who was born about 1777, in PA. Jacob appears in Jay County, during the 1850 census. By 1860, Jacob is listed in Henry Co., IL, at the age of 81. George Metz, a probable son of Jacob, was living with Jacob in 1850 and 1860. Per the probate file of Samuel Metz (1856) in Randolph Co., George Metz made application on behalf of Samuel's widow, Nancy, and selected William Huston as one of the appraisers of Samuel's estate. Since George was born about 1826, and made application on behalf of Samuel's widow, it is believed he was a younger brother of Samuel. In Jay County records, in 1858, George Metz was appointed guardian of one of Samuel's children.
