Geroge and Mildred escaped from a plantation near Louisville, Ky around 1837. They settled in Colchester, Ontairo. George was awarded 160 acres of farm land for his service in the army there. In 1852 The McCoys and twelve children moved to a farm in Ypsilanti, Michigan where he became a conductor on the underground railroad. He hid runaways in his wagons when he went to Detroit to sell his cigars. Elijahs brother William drove one of these wagons.
