George Smith joined the 36th foot regiment at the age of 9 in 1807

George Smith from Berwick joined up 1807 36th regiment of Foot in Richmond Yorks - How he got there from Berwick is unknown. He was 4ft 6in could not write with Grey Eyes and brown hair.

At the age of 16 he served in Spain then Corfu in Greece. He was promoted twice to Corporal but was demoted twuce for being drunk and disorderly. He met a girl called Elizabeth Mullen who was born in 1821 in Zante in Greece and brought her back to Ireland from where he was discharged. On the 1841 census he is living in Sunderland with Miss Mullen whom he marries in Dec 1841 in a rough part of Sunderland by the docks called Lombard Street. He has four boys and one girl presumably by Elizabeth.

On the his first son's birth certificate he is listed as a Chelsea out Pensioner since verified and a labourer but also an ex army sergeant of which there is no record.
