WWI Infantry Private

    William D Chapparone (Sr) was in the Infantry in WWI. Went to France, was in Verdun, and the Argonne-Meuse Offensive. Later was married and had 2 sons. The oldest, William D Chapparone, Jr. was a radioman on the USS Lawrence Destroyer in WWII.

    The emblem on his shoulder patch is the French Cross, which was bestowed upon the 79th Division by a grateful France.

    Verdun was at one end of the Maginot Line. William saw firsthand what trench warfare was. Today Verdun is a graveyard with over 1 million graves.
