Floyd was serving as a Machinist's Mate on the U.S.S. Curtiss in the early 1940s. He was aboard the ship when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and was one of three navy servicemen who were instrumental in getting the ship's engines started to get the ship out of the harbor during the attack. He received a commendation from Admiral Nimitz for his service during the attack.
