Sgt. William Luschan enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on 18 April 1936, serving with Observation Squadron, 8th Marine Corps Reserve.
In Hawaii, he served with Headquarters and Service Squadron 21, Marine Aircraft Group 21, 2nd Marine Division at Ewa Marine Corps Air Station, Oahu, Hawaii. As of October 1941, he was a assigned to be a truck driver and at the time of his loss. (Promoted to the rank of sergeant July 1941).

He was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. His military death certificate simply states that he was "killed in Action, details not known." He was interred in Golden Gate National Cemetery, California.

Circumstances of his death are and were controversial, thus not clear. Reportedly killed by fellow Marines during an exchange of gunfire when Lutschan resisted being put under arrest "under suspicion of espionage." The accuracy of this is under dispute.

Could not find an MOS in these documents, other than listings of having attended trainings with the Reserve units to which he was attached.

He was serving in Observation Squadron 4, Naval Reserve Aviation Base, Opa Locka, Florida in July-Sept. 1936. Served in several Stateside stations prior to being shipped to Ewa in January 1941, mostly in California.
