She opened hundreds of plasma bottles in a given night as her "boys" were snuck off the battlefield under the cover of darkness. To Nurse Carrie Sheetz, each soldier was like a boy from back home to her.

Born on June 14, 1901[i], Carrie S. Thompson Alter Sheetz was from Dauphin County, PA.[ii] She was a daughter, wife, mother, nurse, and she was killed in action during WWII.

Her parents were James Cox Thompson[iii] and Lottie May Shaffer Thompson.[iv] At the time of Carrie’s death, her father, an electrical engineer[v], was the general manager[vi] of Pennsylvania Power and Light Company in Sunbury, PA.[vii] The family was formerly of Cly, Harrisburg and Camp Hill, PA.[viii]

Sheetz lived in both Millersburg and Harrisburg, PA at different times.[ix] After she graduated from Camp Hill High School in 1919, she then graduated from Carlisle Hospital Nursing School in 1922 and then attended the graduate school of nursing at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Nurses Training School[x] finishing in January of 1923.[xi]

A few months after finishing nursing school, Carrie Thompson was working as a nurse when she renewed a youthful romance with Stark Winfield Alter after nursing his father. Alter had graduated in 1921 from Staunton Military School and was working in Carlisle, PA in the garage business.[xii] He was born July 24, 1903 in Carlisle, PA.[xiii]

Carrie and Stark, according to a marriage notice in the Evening News of Harrisburg, PA on April 16, 1923, eloped to Hagerstown, PA[xiv] after just a two week courtship.[xv] They were married in the parsonage of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She was 22 and he was 20.

“We were going to keep our marriage a secret until next fall but felt we should give up and we decided to tell our parents last Sunday. Then we left on a wedding trip to Philadelphia and just returned,” the new bride said in a newspaper story about the elopement. Her parents held a wedding celebration in their home following the marriage announcement.[xvi]

A year later, the couple had a daughter, Anna May Alter, who was born in Carlisle, PA[xvii] on April 24th, 1924. As a mother, Carrie was kept busy as evidenced in local newspaper reports of the day that listed Anna May in piano concerts, dance recitals, school programs and trips to summer camp.

In August of 1927, then known as Carrie T. Alter, she made the Happenings of Interest column in The Standard newspaper of Lykens, PA where it was noted she’d spend a few days in Camp Hill, PA before motoring to Albuquerque, NM to spend some time.[xviii]

The whirlwind marriage did not last. The Alters were divorced on November 29th, 1927.[xix] Their divorce was announced in The Valley Times-Star, a newspaper in Newville, PA.[xx]

On August 29, 1930 at the Lutheran Church of Harrisburg[xxi], she entered into a second marriage with a woodworker at a lumbermill,[xxii] Frank Snyder Sheetz.[xxiii] He was younger than she, having been born on Feb 18, 1906 in Millersburg, PA.[xxiv] He was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy and attended the Renusclaer Polytechnic Institute.[xxv]

The couple lived in Millersburg.[xxvi] They enjoyed time together attending the Plantation Ball by the Junior League,[xxvii] spending holidays at the home of her parents,[xxviii] traveling to Maine,[xxix] attending holiday parties at the West Shore Country Club[xxx] and going on picnics.[xxxi] She was also a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church of Camp Hill, PA.[xxxii] Additionally, Carrie Sheetz was involved with the Middletown Women’s Club and in 1938 was vice-president[xxxiii] and secretary in 1939.[xxxiv]

She was continually active in the Camp Hill[xxxv] and Millersburg Republican Clubs,[xxxvi] attending state conventions, serving as an usher or page,[xxxvii] speaking in radio broadcasts,[xxxviii] giving presentations, running meetings and hosting meetings in her home. In 1936, she was elected president of the Women’s Republican Club of Millersburg. The Harrisburg Telegraph noted that it was one of the most active clubs of the kind in the country and she was one of the most active of members.[xxxix] In 1937, she received an award for obtaining the largest number of Young Republicans as members.[xl]

During the years after college, she had been employed with The Red Cross as a nurse at Vandergrift,[xli] was a former community nurse in Millersburg, PA and since 1939[xlii] had been employed by the State Health Department.[xliii] She had been the assistant to Edith O’Halleran, director of the Bureau of Nursing.[xliv] Sheetz was a member of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association.[xlv]

Carrie T. Sheetz made the news when she jumped to help in an emergency. A Millersburg, PA man attempted to solder a leaking kerosene can while it still contained two quarts of kerosene. It exploded, setting fire to the man. “First aid treatment was administered by Mrs. Frank Sheetz, a nurse of Millersburg, until a physician arrived,” according to The Evening News newspaper on December 12, 1932. The burned man later died.[xlvi]

In 1937, she joined in an effort to control cancer. She became the Captain of Upper Dauphin County in the Woman’s Field Army of the American Cancer Society for the Control of Cancer. The drive was described as one of the greatest and most determined campaigns for the protection of human life in the Lykens Register newspaper.[xlvii]

In an article entitled “Nurses Active in Wide Field,” in the Harrisburg, Telegraph, April 28, 1941, Carrie T. Sheetz is lauded for her work as a public health nurse. Sheetz facilitated several cases of cerebrospinal meningitis being hospitalized, quarantining the family, and visiting daily to make sure medication and food was available.[xlviii]

A few months later, Sheetz was awarded a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia for one year. According to the Lykens Register, this gave her one year’s graduate work in public health nursing. While she was away at her studies, another state nurse filled her duties at the Bureau of Health.[xlix]

At the time of his draft card application, Frank Sheetz was a utility man[l] at Millersburg Manufacturing Company in Millersburg, PA.[li] At the time of WW2, he enlisted about nine months after his wife, joining on September 13, 1943. He was a Warrant Officer with the Seabees, who served in the Pacific theatre[lii] as well as being stationed at Pearl Harbor.[liii]

Carrie did not have to head overseas. She was offered a post as head of nurses at Fort Myer, Virginia but did not take it so she could join active duty.[liv]

HER MILITARY STORY

With her daughter, Anna May, a senior in high school[lv] and living with Carrie’s parents[lvi], Carrie T. Sheetz became part of a Red Cross recruitment campaign for nurses.[lvii] Sheetz, service number N-759827,[lviii] enlisted on January 11, 1943[lix] and reported to Fort Myer, VA.[lx] Carrie trained at Camp Brackenridge.[lxi]

As a supervisor[lxii] with the Army Nurse Corps, 95th Evacuation Hospital.[lxiii] Second Lieutenant Sheetz was the Assistant Chief Nurse[lxiv] with the 400-bed hospital staffed with 40 doctors, 40 nurses and 220 enlisted soldiers.[lxv] She served in North America, Sicily, and Italy[lxvi].

Apparently, it was newsworthy for both husband and wife to be officers in WW2. The Daily Item newspaper in Sunbury, PA headline read “Man and Wife Officers” as it reported that both “Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sheetz are officers in the armed forces” in a 1943 article.[lxvii]

In a history of the 95th, it was said that the nurses of the 95th Evacuation Hospital “seemed to attract disaster[lxviii].”

Her hospital ship, HMHS “Newfoundland[lxix],” a British hospital ship, was bombed and fired on by German planes outside the Gulf of Sarerno’[lxx] on September 25, 1944.[lxxi] The first bomb hit near the ship at 5 a.m. blowing the doors off of hinges, shattering walls and breaking mirrors.[lxxii] Sheetz survived the injuries she received in that September, 1943 bombing.[lxxiii] According to newspaper reports of the day, dispatches emphasized that “the coolness of the nurses helped prevent heavy casualties in the period when the bombs were shattering walls and blowing doors from hinges of the mercy ship. Carrie was knocked unconscious.[lxxiv] Lieutenant Sheetz was trapped in her room several minutes before a rescue squad broke down the jammed door and removed her from the sinking vessel.[lxxv]

“I think God opened it,” Sheetz was reported saying in The Plain Speaker, a newspaper in Hazelton, PA. She had tried for some time to open it, but it would not open. Once out, Sheetz and other nurses climbed down into lifeboats. “Some of the girls would start down the ladders nude and the sailors would pull them back and give them their pants,” The Plain Speaker reported.[lxxvi]

Some of the lifeboats turned out to be damaged. At one point, there were 76 people in one lifeboat. The women used their helmets to bail water. Other hospital ships took the nurses to North Africa for treatment and rest.[lxxvii]

“Then we were afraid we wouldn’t get back to Italy,” Lt. Sheetz said. “We were happy to be back with our outfit and to find that they had missed us,” she said in an article titled “Nurses Escaped Bombing” in The Plain Speaker.[lxxviii]

Next, she was with the evacuation hospital as it followed the first landings of American troops on Sicily.[lxxix] At that time, American forces were digging in as the Germans opened a counter drive on land and in the air.[lxxx]

According to letters shared by her parents, their daughter had “refused a captaincy because it would require her quitting front line activity” reported The Evening News of Harrisburg, PA on March 2, 1944.[lxxxi]

She often wrote home describing how busy she was or how tired she was. Even as she wrote those words, she goes on to describe how courageous our soldiers were. In a story on her death in The Evening News, one of her letters was shared. She wrote home about her experiences.

“Things have eased up, but we are very busy. We fall into bed when we get there and sleep-in spurts. Our food is limited again but later on we will make up for it. I never have been sorry that I am in this grand Army. Of course, I miss home , and all of you, but you can’t win a war being selfish and I’m telling you they really need the hospitals…these boys are so patient. And never let anyone ever tell you they are soft because they have proved themselves the bravest and most courageous boys in the entire Army.”

“I work in a ward where the badly wounded are brought and our first duty is to use blood plasma. Every patient gets at least three bottles to start with and many after that. They also receive one or two on the battlefield. Some of the blood may be from Millersburg donors and without the blood plasma, all our efforts could not save the lives of these boys. I have opened hundreds of these plasma bottles in a night as that is when we get the most of our patients. They can only be reached on the field of battle under the cover of darkness. Tell Millersburgers to give until it hurts.”[lxxxii]

THE BLACKEST DAY

It was a very busy day for the 95th “with about 400 patients in the hospital, loaded ambulances coming in with freshly wounded, and the operating rooms, shock wards, and x-ray sections working at full capacity, at about 1,545 (patients),” from an excerpt of the official account.[lxxxiii]

Major Arthur B. deGrandpre, ` a surgeon attached to the 95th Evac Hospital, wrote in his diary: “(It was) the blackest day in the history of the 95th Evacuation Hospital. About 14:30 (hours), a German bomber came over being chased by a British Spitfire. The enemy pilot dropped his load of bombs in our area – seven small antipersonnel bombs. Spitfire shooting at him.”[lxxxiv]

The Stars and Stripes newspaper told the tale of Sheetz’ last day. It reported in a February 8th, 1944 edition that the previous day had been perilous for the 95th Evacuation Hospital.

A Lutfwaffe pilot blasted the hospital area, a half-mile from the nearest military target, dropping fragmentation bombs in an area containing a large cloth Red Cross. These butterfly type bombs were designed to explode after a contact five feet above the ground, the newspaper reported. One bomb hit the edge of the cloth. The antipersonnel bombs fell on the operating, administrative and ward areas.

“We heard the crash. We jumped for our helmets and then it was over, and we were all outside with all the bandages we could get, taking care of the wounded and covering up the dead. It was all we could do,” said nurse Second Lt. Helen Anderson of the bombing a few hours earlier.[lxxxv]

HER DEATH

Carrie T. Sheetz became a casualty of WW2 that day. During the Battle of Anzio, Italy on February 7, 1944,[lxxxvi] she was hit by bomb fragments while she aided wounded soldiers on the front line of Anzio Beachhead.[lxxxvii] She was one of the three nurses killed when the 95th was bombed by a German plane as it fled from a British fighter over Nettuno.[lxxxviii] The other two nurses who died were Lieutenant and Chief Nurse Blanche Sigman and Lieutenant Marjorie G. Morrow.[lxxxix]

The War Cross of Military Honor, awarded by Italy, was given to Carrie T. Sheetz, and delivered by mail to her parents. The citation, translated from Italian, was signed by General Roberto Bencigenga. It reads “This heroic military nurse of the glorious Fifth Army heedless of the enemy’s violent fire gave proof of a high sense of duty and of contempt for danger. She sacrificed her young life for the ideals of civilization and for the liberation of Rome.[xci]”

MEMORIALS

Carrie T. Sheetz is listed on and remembered at a WWII memorial marker in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Pennsylvania.

HER GRAVE

Four years after her death, her body was brought to Harrisburg, PA for a burial in July of 1948.[xcii] A military service[xciii] was held and Carrie T Sheetz was buried at Rolling Green Memorial Park, Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.[xciv] Military rites were conducted by the Camp Hill American Legion Post.[xcv]

The next month, the Dauphin County, PA, Commissioners filed a headstone application on her behalf.[xcvi]
