John Garrett of Nansemond County was my Great Grand Father nine times removed.

Generation 1

John Garrett was born 1615 in London. England and married ‘Jane Doe’ Dunston (probable kin of John Dunston, a Puritan). John died 1670, Nansemond County, VA.

Generation 2

Thomas was born about 1645 in Nansemond Co., VA and married Bethia Harrison who died about 1719 in Chowan Co., NC. Several generations of Thomas’ and Thomas Jrs’ were recorded in Chowan, Tyrrell and Bertie counties. Thomas’ wills mention only one other son, Humphrey, named for his mothers family.

John Jr. was born about 1650 in Indian Creek, Nansemond County, returned to England following his father’s death in 1670. John died in London England about 1717.

James was born about 1655 in Indian Creek, Nansemond Co. VA and married Jane Doe Bryan (probably the daughter of John Bryan who owned adjacent property). James died before 1719, probably in Pasquotank Co., NC.

Generation 3

John, son of James, was born about 1680. He died in 1735 in Pasquotank County, NC. His eldest son was James. John’s 1734/35 will mentions wife Sarah and two additional sons John and Jonathan.

Bryan, another son of James was born about 1685. He was listed as juryman in eastern precinct Pasquotank County NC in 1722/23. Bryan died before 1746.

Generation 4

Sons of Bryan were; James who was born about 1720 in Pasquotank Co. His 1760 will mentioned “to my brother John’s son James and my brother Freeman’s son John”. James had lived near Moyock NC since 1746. Brother John and his son James were not searched. Brother Freeman who, was born about 1728, lived near Moyock, NC. Freeman died before 1773.

Generation 5

Freeman had two sons. John was born about 1748 and Joseph who was born about 1755. John married Elizabeth Cox of Currituck County, NC. Joseph moved to Deep Creek, VA. He and his sons farmed and logged his many acres. The family cemetery and some building are still in existence.

Generation 6

Children of John and Elizabeth were James who was born about 1768 and died about 1840, and John who was born about 1770. John was not searched.

Edward, third son of John and Elizabeth was born in 1773. He married Olive Culpepper of North West VA. He died in May of 1850.
