Danish West Indies - Slavery and Emancipation
About 85 percent of those living in the Virgin Islands today are descended from slaves, making these records especially pertinent. A slave revolt in St. Croix in 1848 resulted in a proclamation of emancipation for all slaves in the Virgin Islands. The majority of the records cover the 19th century, with the oldest dating back to 1672. Most of the records from the Danish era are in Danish, some are in Gothic script.…More
