The 1860 Census of Carrol County Miss shows a J. F. Smith, age 28, living in Black Hawk with R. W. Cole family. Joseph F. Smith appears on Roster of Co. A, 30 Miss Regiment. He enlisted in this company on Feb 25, 1862. The last card for Joseph F. Smith in Co. G. 22 MISS was June 1861. After the Black Hawk Rifles formed, they could not find a Regiment to join. Many men left the company to find a fighting unit. It seems that this Joseph F. Smith left Black Hawk Rifles and then enlisted with 30 Miss a few months later.
