World War II broke out in Europe when Germany invaded Poland in September 1940. The United Kingdom, along with France, immediately declared war on Germany and sent troops to hold off the Nazi invasion. These Allied efforts were unsuccessful, however, and Poland quickly fell. Germany then began to expand north into Scandinavia, west into France, and east toward the Soviet Union. The UK withstood destructive aerial bombing campaigns during the early years of the war and was able to go on the offensive once the United States joined the war. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy and pushed the Germans back. They then advanced into Germany and received the unconditional surrender of the Nazi state on May 8, 1945, V-E day in Europe. Three months later, Japan surrendered on what is now V-J Day, and WWII ended.
