Australia entered World War II on September 3, 1939, after Germany invaded Poland. The Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Australian Navy, and the Australian Imperial Forces all headed for Europe to fight the Italians and Germans in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East. When Japan joined the war, most Australian forces returned to the Pacific to hold off the Japanese advance. They helped secure key victories at Coral Reef and Midway and retook Papua New Guinea from the invading Japanese. The war in Europe ended on May 7, 1945, with the German surrender, and the war in the Pacific ended on September 2 with the Japanese surrender.
