A quote from an article in the The New York Herald Tribune, dated May 2, 1864, regarding the Battle of Fort Pillow. (This is a newspaper report which can have errors in it.) The 1st Sergeant of Company D, Melville Jenks, was shot while bearing a flag of truce to the Rebels, in token of his and his squad of men's surrender. 1 Sgt Melville Jenks was wounded and captured at the Battle of Fort Pillow on April 12, 1864. It is not clear as to when or where he died. His Death Certificate filed under 11 US Colored Troops(New) states he died at Andersonville. However, the NPS database does not show any Jenks as being a prisoner there or being buried there. The Adjutant General Report for Illinois, Vol 7, includes a history of the 3rd Illinois Cavalry with a roster of soldiers. Melville Jenks is listed as a private from Bloomfield with a comment that he was promoted to the 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery. This means he transferred out of the 3 IL Cavalry into the 6 USCHA as a 1st Sergeant. This document proves that Pvt Jenks of the 3 IL Cav is the ...more

This records refers to the records of 1st Sgt Melville Jenks of the 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery. The records are not clear but one form says he died at Andersonville prison. However, there is no record of a Melville Jenks found in the National Park Service NPS data base of prisoners. If he was sent to Andersonville, then this would be one of the few soldiers from a Black regiment to be sent ...more
