Soldier's name here was "James A. Williams." See his "Volunteer Enlistment" document with identical info, e.g., occupation as "boatman." However, "Where born" is incorrect on this page 4 and is corrected later and on the "Volunteer Enlistment" document as "Madison."

James A. Williams, Co. H. of this images does NOT match the James A. Williams, Company I, of the other frames. On Company Muster Rolls for "Mar & Apl" and "May & June" 1865, JAW, Company I, was "Detached as Teamster per S.O. No. 9, 25th A.C., Jany 9 '65." JAW is named as one of the "Colored Soldiers" from North Castle, Westchester County, NY, in Scharf's County History, Vol. II, p. 636. He ...more
