The Adjutant General Report for Illinois, Vol 7, includes a history of the 3rd Illinois Cavalry with a roster of soldiers. Melville Jenks is listed as a private from Bloomfield with a comment that he was promoted to the 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery. This means he transferred out of the 3 IL Cavalry into the 6 USCHA as a 1st Sergeant. There were two other privates who transferred and were ...more

There are several records and other sources that refer to Private Melville Jenks of the 3rd Illinois Cavalry. It is possible that Jenks transferred from the 3 ILL Cav into the 6 USCHA to fill the ranks for NCOs needed for the regiment.

These records for 1st Sgt Melville Jenks filed under 11 USCT(New) state that he was wounded at the Battle of Fort Pillow and died at Andersonville. However, there are no records of a soldier by this name in the National Park Service NPS records for prisoners at Andersonville. Note--the 11 US Colored Troop(New) was reorganized with survivors of the 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery. Many of the ...more
