Sinking of the USS Maine described in the Chicago Tribune - 16 Feb 1898
The sinking of the USS Maine on February 15, 1898 precipitated the Spanish-American War and popularized the phrase "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!" The cause of the explosion is still unclear.
