Confederate P.O.W Died Of Old Age

Enlisted at age 62, as a subsitute. He spent much of his career either hospitalized, as a hospital guard, or attached to the Quartermaster's Department. Early was captured at Petersburg, Virginia, on April 3, 1865, and was sent to Hart's Island. He died on June 24, 1865, the cause of his death being given as "old age." My 2 x great-grandfather was captured April 2nd and also sent to Hart's Island, N.Y. in the same group of prisoners. He managed to survive and made it back to North Carolina. He was only 40 ! '
