Antietam, and How the Union Won the Battle

Prior to the battle, Confederate plans were discovered by Union troops, wrapped around 3 cigars laying in the grass. Although a copy of the plans had been received by Gen. Hill, the battle was compromised and the Union won the day - 17 Sep 1862.

I always wonder about huge battles over bridges crossing tiny rivers. The river looks like such a small one, why was the bridge so important?

My guess is that, in inclement weather, the transport of large and heavy items, such as munitions would be severely impeded without the bridges.
