Fan letter to Benjamin Butler, 1862
Monday Feb'y 10th 1862. Major Ben. B. Butler--General--I see by the papers that the remainder of the "Butler Expedition" is soon to proceed southward. Allow me to remind you of "the army of reserves--the women of Massachusetts with their broomsticks" who will fly to your aid numerously if needs be--each one armed as Pallas with her pike! Can you fail of victory? I think not!--One of them." The back says Mrs. Capt. Amos Barnes, which may be a nom de plume, based on a Revolutionary War man.
