GGrandfather-in-law

William Bryson McMahan served in the Confederate army, deserted (as many farmers did) after 2 years of bloody battles, was on the lam for a year, captured and a POW for a year at Camp Morton, Indiana. He was released at the end of that year, and no doubt had to walk home.
