Major Benjamin Tallmadge
Maj. Tallmadge, in charge of Washington's secret service, suspected John Andre of being a spy and perhaps Arnold of being a traitor, but sent a letter to Arnold telling him Andre had been captured. Arnold, with that warning, escaped.
