Missouri certificate protecting former slave
A beautiful document, dated June 1, 1863, Springfield, Mo, declaring Charles Anderson, a negro man about 17 years old, "a captive of war and as such entitled to the protection of the officers of the United States." This is in obedience to a War Dept. Order, which follows up on Lincoln's Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, September, 1862.
