General William Cogswell
Following the attack on the 6th Massachusetts Regiment on its passage through Baltimore, Cogswell turned his law office into a recruiting center and raised a full company of volunteers in 24 hours. This was the first company in the country recruited for the war. With Cogswell as its Captain, it became Company C of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry.
