Galvanized Tar
Landsman Reese Kirkland was a "galvanized tar", a term applied to those prisoners of war from the Confederacy that took the oath to the Union and joined the Union Navy. He had been a prisoner at Camp Douglas Chicago, Ilinois and enlisted into the Navy either on the 20th or 22nd of December 1863. He served until his discharge in June of 1865.
