Letter urging South Carolina not to secede, November 13, 1860
Another letter to Governor William Gist of South Carolina, urging him to pull the state back from the brink of secession. J. P. Bradley, a Southerner living in New Haven, CT, compares South Carolina to Judas Iscariot. He asks what could be the reason for secession--it could not be the election of Lincoln. However, he never mentions slavery.
