Enslaved Child Hagar and Mother Sue Freed by Will of Samuel Kilpatrick, SC, 1787
The estate inventory of Samuel Kilpatrick of Charleston, SC, written in 1787, contains the note, "A Negro Wench named Sue and her child Hagar being enfranchised by the Will of the within mentioned Samuel Kilpatrick that is by the said Will the child Hagar to be free at the Time of Decease of the said Samuel Kilpatrick and the said Wench Sue to be free at the time of her child Hagar arriving at the agwe of sixteen years being produced and shewn to us the Subscribers."
