Slave Tom, Escaped from Charleston, SC to Jamaica During the American Revolution
The chaos of war time and the presence of British troops in SC during the American Revolution created opportunities for the enslaved to escape. The estate sale record for slaveholder John Callaghan notes that "Tom - a Saddler, Ranaway to Jamaica & went with Lord C. Montague's Regt. ye 25 May 1781."
